I believe that we all have a spiritual dimension. If we recognise and cultivate our spirituality, we can enjoy its ultimate joy and healing power. When the spiritual power is used for a higher purpose, nothing can come between us and what we desire to achieve.
There is a growing body of research that shows the positive impact of spirituality and/or religion on the improvement of mental health. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is a powerful tool for positive mental health change, uses mindfulness aligned with spiritual practice.
I am fascinated by the poet, Rumi, and Sufism.
Rumi’s poems are inspiring and go beyond unhealthy thinking hence they inspire peace. Rumi realises the pain of grief and inspires joy through love. Here are some of my favourite quotes from Rumi:
“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.”
“Don’t feel lonely, the entire universe is inside you.”
“What you seek is seeking you.”
“If you are irritated by every rub, how will your mirror be polished?”
“You were born with wings, why prefer to crawl through life?”
“Be like a tree, let the dead leaves drop.”
“Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. There is no separation for those who love with their heart and soul.”
As well as Rumi, I have followed and learned spiritual practices from Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, and Joe Dispensa.
My beliefs and philosophies include the following:
- The main reason for our unhappiness is our thoughts and not our problems.
- We all have the capacity inside us to attract what it is that we desire as long as we ignore the negative voice in our heads.
- Do not believe in scarcity. It is all made up by ego.
- The mind makes life seem too serious. Much more serious than it is.
- Most people are just waiting to start living.
- Sometimes very problematic situations seem damaging while they are opportunities for new positive changes.
- True happiness emerges when you change who you are and not when you solve your problems or change your life situation.
It is a great joy to just observe the thoughts in the head as something that is outside self rather than following every thought in the head. With spirituality you can stop uncontrollable thinking which takes us away from our peaceful essence and feeling the joy of being one with the universe.
